The Yucatan Vireo has a tiny world
distribution, being mainly confined to islands and keys in the
Caribbean, close to the mainland of Mexico (Quintana Roo only),
Belize and Honduras. The only place where they can be seen in
our region is on the Bay Islands, off the north coast of Honduras.
I didn’t see them during brief birding trips when I visited
Utila, but they were common and conspicuous when I visited Roatan.
On 22nd March I found a pair that was building a nest (see photos
below). They must have just started and were building it in
the fork of a thin branch that was hanging in the open about
2.5 metres over a path in the Sundancer resort. Both birds seemed
to be involved (though I never had a confirmed sighting of both
birds with nest material at the same time, though I had them
both at the nest at the same time) and I saw them collecting
cobwebs and thin strands from the bark of small bushes nearby.
By 26th March it appeared to be complete. It was hemispherical
in shape and probably about 12cm across (though it wasn’t
measured). I returned on 1st April and a bird was sitting on
two eggs, which were white with a few sparsely distributed dark
specs. I left the island that day, so I could make no further
observations. Throughout my observations of this pair, they
seemed very unconcerned about my presence and I had a similar
feeling with others that I saw around the island.
