Spotted Antbird

Hylophylax naevioides

Tom Jenner

This species is found in the northern parts of South America and in the southern half of Central America, but only just reaches into our region in eastern Honduras which is at the northernmost extent of its range. Bonta and Anderson describe them as common in the region, which I consider a bit of an exaggeration (there were only 4 records in the country prior to Land’s publication in 1968) and I would consider them to be fairly common. On my second visit to Las Marias, John Jackson and I observed a number of Spotted Antbirds feeding at an ant swarm, along with many other ant-followers. On my third visit, Bryan Sharp and I saw several around the cabin below Pico Dama, at an elevation of about 400m. Again, they were associated with an ant swarm and we captured 3 of them in mist-nets.
