This species ranges along the Pacific slope of Middle America
from southern Mexico to north-west Costa Rica. However, in Honduras
its range extends a long way onto the Caribbean slope. Howell
and Webb do not show it extending to the Caribbean coast, but
I had a couple of birds at Omoa, right on the north Honduran
coast, near the Guatemala border, one was singing during springtime
and probably breeding. In Guatemala, I have only ever seen them
on the Pacific slope at Monterrico and El Palmar Viejo, though
I thought I heard a bird singing in the Motagua Valley that
I couldn’t track down. They are not a commonly encountered
bird in El Salvador and the only main birding site where I have
seen them is Perquin. I have also seen one at the school where
I work in Merliot. In Honduras, I have only ever seen them at
Copan, just outside La Muralla, Lago Yojoa, Comayagoa and Omoa.
