This species is found throughout the region, though they tend
to be absent from the coastal plains. I have only ever seen
them at fairly high altitudes, though Howell and Webb says that
they can be found almost to sea level. They are generally harder
to find than the larger, more brightly coloured toucans and
they tend to stay within the forest. In Guatemala, I have seen
them at Aguas Amargas, Biotopo del Quetzal and Volcan Chicabal.
In Honduras, I have seen them at La Muralla, La Tigra, Tempiscapa
and Guisayote. In El Salvador, I have seen them at Cerro Verde,
El Imposible and Montecristo.
